Painted Love Lipsticks from Kat Von D’s Sephora collection come in a range of richly pigmented, long-wearing bold and demure shades with a matte finish. Some of my favorites in my (enormous) lipstick collection hail from Kat’s line.
The collection started out with just a handful of colors, then expanded by a few more, and recently 7 new colors came out in addition to the existing collection. In all, I own 9 of the 15 shades currently available. Here’s my rundown.
Adora — classy red that leans gold/orange with a matte foil finish
Just beautiful. I love this shade so much I purchased a backup tube, since it’s a limited edition. I may get a third. If that doesn’t tell you how much I love this color, then I don’t know how else to express it. This is also one of the few reds my boyfriend actually likes (generally, he’s not a fan of the bold lip).
Backstage Bambi — shocking fuchsia pink
Definitely not for shy girls… This is a very bright, in-your-face color, but I like it and think I can get away with wearing it. I recommend toning down the color by blotting before heading out the door.
Cathedral — warm light brown with pink tone
Reminds me a bit of Twig from M.A.C., perhaps a shade darker. Really nice fall color.
Celebutard — light peachy beige
Great for a nude lip. And because Kat’s lipsticks are full-coverage, my natural lip color is effectively masked. One thing, though — this shade requires exfoliated, moisturized lips. This shade will only amplify dry patches and I promise it will look bad. I recommend applying this one with a lip brush, too.
Coral Castle — orange-ish pinky coral with shimmer
Surprisingly wearable! The online swatch looks pure orange, but in real life there is more pink in this shade. Very pretty, good for spring and summer.
Lolita — brownish mauve with pink tone
One of my favorites in this line! Suitable for work and play and works well on a variety of complexions.
Misfit — brownish red
Great fall/winter color, and somewhat on the vampy side. Makes for a sophisticated red lip without screaming, “Look! I’m wearing red lipstick!”
Prayer — mauve-brown
Another great fall color. Mind, though, that this shade seems to make any tooth yellowness appear worse than it really is.
Ritual — warm tan-brown with rosy tone
This is a very pretty, natural-looking brown shade. It also has a way of making my skin glow… the warm tone of this lipstick just seems to brighten my whole face. Nice!
A few thoughts on the quality of the these lipsticks…
All of Kat’s lipsticks are creamy, rich and packed with color. They have a matte finish but I do not find them to be drying. These also last quite long without requiring reapplication, though the color will fade a little if I’m eating, drinking or smooching.
The newest shades feel even creamier, and I attribute this to their new, more emollient formula. The new formula also makes them feel lighter without sacrificing color payoff or staying power.
At $18 per tube, you don’t have a lot of product, but the quality is quite good so I think the price is justified. The packaging is nice and sturdy, too. The cap fits tightly and I’ve never had an issue with it coming off in my purse. The bottom is clear Lucite and shows a sample of the color inside.
As with the rest of the Kat Von D collection at Sephora, Painted Love Lipstick lives up to its hype. With an expanded shade range and more wearable formula, there’s bound to be something here for everyone.

This is me wearing Kat's lipstick in Adora. With black eyeliner and gold shadow, this combo is one of my favorite looks!
